The hype machine went into overdrive about the forthcoming Gphone/Google phone, but the prices leaked to Gizmodo suggest it will be more like business as usual Google is holding an Android-related press conference at its headquarters in California on Tuesday 5 January, presumably to announce details of the Nexus One phone that Googlers have been ( as related here on 14 December ) “dogfooding”.

Windows only: Image resizing tools are a dime a dozen, but free utility Shrink Pic is actually an extremely clever original: Instead of any requiring manual processing, it runs in the background and automatically resizes images whenever you attach or upload them. A perfect tool for frequent Facebook uploaders, for example, Shrink Pic works with a number of applications (most browsers, Outlook, Thunderbird, Skype, and MSN Messenger, to name just a few) to monitor when you upload, attach, or send pictures via IM. When you do, it automatically resizes the images in the background based on user-defined settings, then uploads the smaller image (so you don’t have to wait several minutes for an upload to complete just to have it severely compressed at its destination anyway)

Following a difficult year, Spinvox’s operation providing translation of mobile calls to text messages has been purchased – but investors will lose out Earlier reports by PaidContent had said that Nuance, a digital speech conversion company based in Burlington, Massachusetts, might buy troubled voicemail-to-text counterpart Spinvox before year’s end – and Nuance on Wednesday confirmed exactly that… The price – $102.5 million – is less than half the more-than-$200 million in investment that Spinvox had raised before things started to go bad earlier this year, so there’s significant loss here for investors. It comes in $66 million in cash and $36.5 million in Nuance shares (2.3 million)

Six months after launching City Tours in Labs , Google’s Maps team has tweaked the interface and made it more friendly to how people actually vacation: head to a city, pick places to go, and get precise directions to them.
